The River Parrett Trail has always been a favourite walk for our visitors here at Southfork Caravan Park, and with Section 4 of the walk (Ham Hill to Langport) being just 3.1 miles from Southfork it is a fantastic base for exploring the Somerset Levels and beautiful surrounding areas.
Thanks to a recent collaboration between local groups, volunteers and Somerset District and County Councils, a new lease of life has been given to this much loved long-distance walk, with the aim of encouraging walkers (both visiting and local!) to explore, enjoy and experience what Somerset has to offer.
The South Somerset Tourism Team have created an extensive range of free resources to help assist walkers in experiencing the most from the trail, which can be viewed and downloaded online on the Visit South Somerset website.
Routes and Maps
The new River Parrett Trail information hub on the Visit South Somerset website has a wealth of information and the full River Parrett Trail guide can be downloaded in .PDF format. This guide covers all sections of the trail, with information about each stage detailing miles covered, the best place to park, where to eat and even fascinating information on what to look out for and places to visit whilst in the area.
If you don’t fancy covering the whole 50 miles, the trail has been split into six easy sections - see below for details (also downloadable in .PDF format from the information hub):
- Section 1: Chedington to Merriott
- Section 2: Merriott to Ham Hill
- Section 3 : Merriott to Langport via Western Link
- Section 4: Ham Hill to Langport
- Section 5: Langport to Bridgwater
- Section 6: Bridgwater to Stert Point
Fantastic short films
Possibly, the best part about the re-launch of the River Parrett Trail are the short films that accompany it. Working alongside Somerset’s highly acclaimed songwriter and guitarist, Kitty Macfarlane, and local retired Blue Badge Guide, Dot Walford, Visit South Somerset produced a series of films to capture the wild and natural beauty of the trail.
Both Kitty and Dot’s passion for the area is obvious through the medium of spoken word and song, these videos are not only informative but also very captivating to watch - definitely worth checking out. These are all available to download from the Visit South Somerset Youtube channel and website.
