The South Somerset 80-mile Cycleway is a great way to explore the stunning countryside of Somerset. Starting in Yeovil, the route takes you through some of the county's most beautiful villages and market towns, including Langport, Somerton and Castle Cary. Along the way, you'll pass through rolling hills, lush green fields and rural lanes lined with hedgerows. Take advantage of the numerous cafes located along the route to sample authentic Somerset cuisine and beverages. Southfork Caravan Park is only 1 mile from South Petherton so why not stop by for some food and refreshments or even stay the night.
As you make your way along the cycleway, be sure to take in some of the area's historical attractions such as Ham Hill, Montacute House and Barrington Court. Some of our favourite places to visit are:
- Cadbury Castle is an Iron Age hill fort that offers a panoramic view of Glastonbury Tor and its surrounding area on clear days.
- Stembridge Tower Mill, located near Low Ham Church (also known as the "Church in the Field"), is the only remaining thatched windmill in the United Kingdom.
- East Coker is renowned as one of the most picturesque villages in the county, boasting plentiful thatched cottages. It is also the burial site of the celebrated poet T.S Eliot. Adjoining East Coker is Sutton Bingham, an ideal spot for a tranquil picnic and observing local wildlife.
- A visit to Ham Hill Country Park and Montacute House is a rewarding experience. Climbing to the summit of Ham Hill provides visitors with panoramic views of the county, after which they can descend the hill to explore the National Trust's Elizabethan mansion, Montacute House.
The cycleway also offers cyclists the opportunity to explore picturesque rural villages and vibrant independent towns, some of which are included below:
- Yeovil is a major town located in South Somerset, renowned for its rich heritage. It boasts a range of leisure facilities, including a Green Flag park, as well as popular high street shops and independent cafes.
- Dowlish Wake is an attractive village which is the home of Perry's Cider Mills, a producer that has won numerous awards. The village also boasts a productive orchard.
- The town of Ilminster is home to a grand Minster church, which towers over the area. Its mellow hamstone architecture and vibrant arts centre contribute to its charm.
- Langport was once a river port located on the River Parrett, featuring distinct residences along Bow Street and a gatehouse referred to as the "hanging chapel".
- Somerton is a bustling town renowned for its attractive architecture, including a 17th century square, market cross and graceful homes.
- Castle Cary is a market town with a main street of thatch and golden stone properties, as well as an 18th century "pepper pot" lockup. The town has a vibrant atmosphere.
- Sherborne is a picturesque and historical market town. It is known for its 15th century abbey, which was founded by St Aldhelm in 705 AD and became the burial site of King Edward VI. Sherborne also has two castles on its outskirts; Sherborne Castle, a 16th century Tudor house built by Sir Walter Raleigh; and Thornford Castle, a 12th century Norman fortress.
